Chiropractic & Manual Therapies

Manual therapy is an intervention commonly advocated in the management of dizziness of a suspected cervical origin. Vestibular rehabilitation exercises have been shown to be effective in the treatment of unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders, and have also been suggested in the literature as an adjunct in the treatment of cervicogenic dizziness. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the evidence for manual therapy, in conjunction with or without vestibular rehabilitation, in the management of cervicogenic dizziness.

Neck pain is a common diagnosis in the physical therapy setting, yet there is no gold standard for treatment. This study is part of a growing body of literature on the use of thoracic spine thrust manipulation for the treatment of individuals with mechanical neck pain.

Spinal manipulation has been used for hundreds of years40 and is commonly performed by physical therapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and medical practitioners. Spinal manipulation is defined as "a small amplitude manipulative thrust technique performed with speed." Manipulations to the thoracic spine are typically applied so that the emphasis of movement is localized to a single intervertebral level to restore its range of movement. Spinal manipulation has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for patients with cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine pain when clinically indicated. Mechanisms to explain how spinal manipulation works are not well defined, and there is a lack of evidence to support existing theories.

Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

The objective of this study was to document the evolution of cranial asymmetries in infants with signs of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly who were to undergo a course of four osteopathic treatments — in addition to the standard positioning recommendations — as well as to determine the feasibility of using this methodology to conduct a randomized clinical trial investigating the impact of osteopathic intervention for infants with NSOP.
