Tension-type headache (TTH) is essentially defined as bilateral headache of a pressing or tightening quality without a known medical cause. Myofascial release (MFR) is currently being applied for patients with TTH but its efficacy has not been evaluated formally. To investigate whether direct technique myofascial release (DT-MFR) reduces the frequency of headache more effectively than the indirect technique myofascial release (IDT-MFR) in comparison to a Control Group receiving slow soft stroking. This study provides evidence that Direct Technique or Indirect Technique Myofascial Release is more effective than the Control Intervention for tension headache.

The aim of this case series was to investigate changes in pain and pressure pain sensitivity after manual treatment of active trigger points (TrPs) in the shoulder muscles in individuals with unilateral shoulder impingement. It has shown that manual treatment of active muscle TrPs can help to reduce shoulder pain and pressure sensitivity in shoulder impingement. Current findings suggest that active TrPs in the shoulder musculature may contribute directly to shoulder complaint and sensitization in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome, although future randomized controlled trials are required.

The use of palpation to diagnose the movement and positional components of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction is commonly taught within osteopathy. However, concerns have been raised about the reliability of such protocols. The aim of this study was to investigate the inter-rater reliability of four traditional static palpation tests based upon the Frank Mitchell Sr biomechanical model of pelvic movement as used to diagnose and treat positional pelvic joint dysfunction. This small study demonstrated “Poor” inter-rater reliability of the Mitchell Model. It is suggested that the inclusion of this osteopathic model within curricula be reviewed forthwith.

Because spinal manipulation and soft-tissue therapy increase joint mobility and decrease muscle hypertonicity, respectively, applying these interventions to the chest wall in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease could reduce chest wall rigidity, thereby improving breathing mechanics. Improvements in breathing mechanics reduce the work of the respiratory muscles and delay the onset of dyspnea.

Manual Therapy

Manual palpation is commonly used for the assessment of patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. During assessment of lumbo-pelvic disorders in particular, it may be used not only to explore pain and resistance in the region, but also to evaluate the symmetry and movement quality of the area.
