Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a distinctive and foundational aspect of osteopathic medicine. Several studies have reported a decline in the use of OMT by practicing osteopathic physicians, but the reasons for this decline have not been fully investigated. The objective of this study was to investigate osteopathic medical students' attitudes and beliefs regarding osteopathic philosophy, including OMT.

Neck pain is a common complaint of patients presenting to physical therapy, with annual incidence estimated as high as 17.9 percent of the population, estimates of lifetime incidence ranging from 22 to 70 percent and estimates of more than one-third of all patients with neck pain continuing to experience discomfort upon six month follow-up. Physical therapy treatment of neck pain varies between therapists and across treatment environments. This case report describes successful outpatient physical therapy intervention — including High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust spinal manipulation — of a 43-year-old female patient with neck pain who did not fit ideal clinical prediction rule criteria for thoracic or cervical manipulation following an initial unsuccessful course of physical therapy.

The aim of this case series was to investigate changes in pain and pressure pain sensitivity after manual treatment of active trigger points in the shoulder muscles in individuals with unilateral shoulder impingement. In conclusion, this case series has shown that manual treatment of active muscle TrPs can help to reduce shoulder pain and pressure sensitivity in shoulder impingement. Current findings suggest that active TrPs in the shoulder musculature may contribute directly to shoulder complaint and sensitization in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome, although future randomized controlled trials are required.

The number of colleges of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic medical students, and osteopathic physicians in practice has been consistently growing since the 1960s. In recent years, the growth of the profession has been exponential. Despite this growth, graduates of COMs are increasingly choosing allopathic residencies. The authors believe that this trend may stem from a lack of focus on osteopathic principles and practice in COMs, as well as geographic and specialty limitations of available osteopathic residency positions.

Since its inception, osteopathic medicine has been concerned with the lymphatic system. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of lymphatic osteopathic manipulative treatment techniques in affecting fluid management and immune function. Many of the functions provided by the lymphatic system and augmented by OMT are necessary for proper wound healing. The authors of this study highlight the unique contribution of the lymphatics to wound healing, as well as the unique contribution of OMT to lymphatic-directed treatment of patients with chronic wounds. They also propose this information be used as a basis for research into the effects of OMT on chronic wound healing in patients.
